The power of paying it forward: why recognising changemakers matters

Posted 2025

Rachel Eason-Whale - head of impact and inclusion at our headline sponsor, L&C - explores why it's important to pay it forward.

In every industry, there are unsung heroes. People who go above and beyond, not for recognition but because it’s who they are. They drive change, inspire others, and push boundaries, often without expecting anything in return. Yet, one of the most powerful things we can do for them and for the culture we want to build is to pay it forward through recognition.

Have you or your organisation ever been nominated for an award?

I have, and I can tell you it felt incredibly humbling. To know that someone saw the work I/we were doing and believed it deserved to be acknowledged gave me a sense of pride, encouragement and renewed energy. It wasn’t about standing on a stage or collecting a trophy it was about feeling seen. It reminded me that the little moments of extra effort, the unseen challenges, and the resilience mattered.

Being nominated felt like a powerful vote of confidence, and that experience reinforced something for me: recognition fuels more good work. It’s a ripple effect.

What inspired me to drive a 'pay it forward' campaign

A few years ago, I had a conversation that really stuck with me. I was chatting with Ali Crossley from Legal & General at the Women in Protection conference, and we were discussing her next steps. She said something simple but powerful - that she wanted to pay it forward because she was grateful for the journey she had been on. That message stayed with me. It made me think about all the ways we can help lift others up and how important it is to create opportunities for recognition, encouragement and growth.

This inspiration was part of the reason why at L&C, we felt so passionately about supporting the Women’s Recognition Awards as a 3-year sponsorship. We recognised the variety of awards available now, offering more opportunities than ever to shine a light on incredible talent. We wanted to be part of something that highlighted the women making a difference in our industry, and ultimately inspired positive change for the future.

Why it’s vital to recognise changemakers

Recognition does more than just make someone feel good, it validates their purpose and gives others a model to follow. It highlights the impact of perseverance, innovation, and compassion, and encourages a culture where these qualities are celebrated and multiplied.

But here’s the thing: don’t assume that someone who inspires you has already been nominated.

You might think, “Oh, everyone must have noticed how brilliant they are.” But the reality is that many changemakers work quietly, out of the spotlight, motivated purely by their values. Unless someone steps forward to champion them, their efforts may never be formally recognised.

Recognition is a form of leadership. By lifting others up, you contribute to a healthier, stronger and more inclusive industry.

Nominate beyond your own organisation

When we talk about making a difference, it shouldn’t stop at our own doors. Look across the industry. Think about the brokers, lenders, underwriters, entrepreneurs, customer service heroes, community advocates and others who are quietly leading change beyond your company.

When we lift up changemakers from different corners of our sector, we:

· Break down silos and build stronger communities.

· Spotlight innovation happening outside our immediate circles.

· Show that true leadership is boundaryless.

Nominating someone from another organisation doesn’t just benefit them, it benefits all of us by raising the standard of excellence across the industry.

The nominations for WRA are open
